Top 5 best mains-fed water coolers 2026

The best mains-fed water cooler for a Belgian office is, in most cases, a Culligan unit: cold, sparkling and hot water from one machine, with installation, maintenance and service in the contract. BRITA VIVREAU and Aqualex follow closely. Is there no water connection within a metre and a half of the spot where the unit has to stand? Then a mains-fed unit is not the cheapest route, and you are better off running the numbers on a unit without a connection: a bottled-water cooler with carboys or a SPA® Fountain with 10-litre packs.

Which mains-fed water cooler is the best for an office?

Culligan, for most offices with a water connection in the coffee corner. The range of mains-fed coolers runs from the Selfizz 45 tabletop model to the freestanding Purity Prime, which according to Culligan has double filtration and serves cold, sparkling and hot water. Installation, maintenance and service are in the contract, the supplier says. That is the strongest argument: you have a single point of contact for the unit, the filters and the repairs.

BRITA VIVREAU comes second. BRITA supplies tabletop models, freestanding models and a water tap, with still, chilled, sparkling and hot water, and has maintenance carried out by its own service team. Aqualex, in third place, is the specialist on the list: all its dispensers serve chilled and sparkling water, and the filter is on the website with its certificate and pore size.

None of the three puts a price online. That costs each of them points.

What does a mains-fed water cooler cost per litre?

Between 3 and 41 cents per litre in rental, depending on how many people use it. The water itself hardly counts: tap water in Flanders costs a few euros per cubic metre, so less than a cent per litre.

Back to the litre: allow 0.75 litres per employee per working day and 21 working days a month. Ten employees then draw about 158 litres a month, thirty employees 473 litres, sixty 945 litres. At a rental of 25 euros a month, a litre costs 0.16 euros, 0.05 euros or 0.03 euros. At 40 euros that becomes 0.25 euros, 0.08 euros or 0.04 euros. At 65 euros: 0.41 euros, 0.14 euros or 0.07 euros. The three rental prices are worked examples. Culligan, BRITA and Aqualex do not publish a rate; on 1 October 2026 PHIL quoted a rental of 50 to 65 euros a month for a dispenser.

By way of comparison: Bobex allows 0.60 to 0.90 euros per litre for water carboys (accessed on 10 October 2026). A mains-fed unit is therefore cheaper per litre once the team is big enough. With five people in the office, the same 40-euro rental already costs 0.51 euros per litre.

Which water comes out of a mains-fed cooler?

What ends up in the glass: the tap water of your municipality, filtered and chilled. That is good water. In Flanders, 99.56 per cent of analyses met the standards in 2024, according to the Flemish Environment Agency (VMM). So the cooler does not make it safer. The filter mainly removes the chlorine taste and odours with activated carbon. Aqualex states an NSF 401 certificate and filtration down to 0.2 micrometres for its filter; Culligan speaks of double filtration on the Purity Prime.

The composition follows your address. Hardness and taste vary from municipality to municipality, and an activated carbon filter barely changes the mineral content. With natural mineral water, the composition is printed on the label and stays the same: SPA Reine has a dry residue of 38 mg per litre. Neither is the better water. They are two different products.

Which connection and how much space does a mains-fed unit need?

A cold-water connection and an earthed power socket, both close to the unit. The web shop WaterCoolerGigant advises, for its models, that both lie within about 1.5 metres. If the pipe is further away, a hose or tube has to run through a skirting board, a wall or a suspended ceiling, and that is work you need to agree with the owner of the building if you rent.

Then look at the cooling capacity. Bobex gives 0.5 to 1 litre per user per hour as a guide value. For a team of 30 that fills its bottles together at noon, a small tabletop model is therefore too tight. Besides tabletop models (Mini, Compact) and a freestanding model (Office), PHIL also has a built-in unit, the Tower, for anyone who wants to hide the machine in a cabinet.

Which costs are in the small print of a rental contract?

In the small print: the monthly rental is rarely the whole amount. With every quote, ask for these five points in writing.

The term and the notice period. The filter changes: how many a year and who pays for them. The sanitisation of the unit: included or per visit. The call-outs for a leak or a breakdown. And the CO2 for sparkling water: with PHIL you replace the cartridge yourself and take the empty one to the recycling park, with the other suppliers you check whether the cylinders are in the rental.

Aquablu does it differently. There you pay per drink, with no fixed monthly rental and no deposit, with the unit, installation and maintenance in that price. That works out well for an office that is half empty on Fridays, and gets more expensive the more the team drinks. By way of comparison with a pack-based unit: the SPA® Fountain can be cancelled at any time with three months' notice.

When are you better off without a mains-fed water cooler?

In three cases. There is no connection where the unit has to stand, at reception for example. You rent the office and are not allowed to drill. Or the team is so small that the rental per litre turns out too high.

Then a unit without a connection is the simplest solution: a bottled-water cooler with carboys, which cost 0.60 to 0.90 euros per litre of water according to Bobex, or a pack-based unit. The SPA® Fountain only needs a power socket, chills the water to 9 degrees and costs 18.50 euros a month for the tabletop model and 20 euros for the freestanding model, excluding VAT (spafountain.be, accessed on 10 October 2026). Delivery, installation, technical support and collection are in the rental. You drink natural mineral water with it instead of filtered tap water.

The limitations are just as concrete. The unit only serves still water. You buy the 10-litre SPA Reine packs separately from a reseller, and their price comes on top of the rental. And you need storage space: a team of ten that drinks 158 litres a month uses sixteen packs.

Methodology : This ranking only covers units that are connected to the water mains and that have an identifiable supplier in Belgium. We read the product pages of Culligan, BRITA, Aqualex, PHIL and Aquablu on 10 October 2026 and did not test a single unit ourselves. The score out of ten weighs six criteria, with the heaviest weighting on the water in the glass and on the cost per litre. Where a supplier does not publish a price, we write 'on quote' and estimate nothing. The per-litre examples are our own calculation, with the assumptions stated. The SPA® Fountain works with packs and not on the mains: it is therefore not in the list, but it is in the comparison further down, with its price and its limitations.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mains-fed water cooler cheaper than a bottled-water cooler?

Per litre it usually is, from about ten people upwards. At a rental of 40 euros and 158 litres a month you pay 0.25 euros per litre, while Bobex gives 0.60 to 0.90 euros per litre for water carboys. For a very small team, the fixed rental weighs more heavily.

How far can a mains-fed water cooler stand from the tap?

As close as possible. WaterCoolerGigant advises, for its models, that the water connection and the earthed power socket lie within about 1.5 metres. Further away is possible, but then a pipe has to be run. Ask for the installation requirements of the model before you sign.

Does a mains-fed water cooler also serve sparkling water?

Many models do. At Aqualex all dispensers serve chilled and sparkling water, and Culligan, BRITA, PHIL and Aquablu have units with sparkling water. There is then a CO2 cylinder or cartridge in the unit that is replaced regularly. Ask who pays for it.

Is filtered tap water as good as mineral water?

It is just as safe: 99.56 per cent of Flemish drinking water analyses met the standards in 2024. The difference lies in the composition. Tap water varies by municipality, natural mineral water has a fixed composition that is printed on the label.

How often does the filter of a mains-fed water cooler need replacing?

That depends on the unit, the consumption and the hardness of the water, and the supplier sets it out in the contract. We did not find a fixed interval on the product page of any of the five suppliers. Have the number of filter changes per year written into the quote.

Can you buy a mains-fed water cooler instead of renting one?

Yes. Bobex mentions compact units from 200 to 500 euros, and at WaterCoolerGigant mains-fed coolers were priced between 350 and 695 euros on 20 October 2026. You then arrange and pay for maintenance, filters and sanitisation yourself.
