Top 6 best office water coolers 2026

With six criteria weighted equally, Culligan scores highest for a Belgian office with a water connection nearby, just ahead of the BRITA VIVREAU Top, the best choice for sparkling water. If there is no pipe within easy reach, two kinds of unit remain: a bottled-water cooler with carboys, or the SPA® Fountain with 10-litre SPA Reine packs, which only needs a power socket and rents from €18.50 a month excluding VAT. The SPA® Fountain is the only unit in this list that works without a connection and pours natural mineral water with a fixed composition, but once the packs are counted it is the most expensive option per litre in this comparison.

Which water cooler is the best for an office in Belgium?

With the six criteria weighted equally: Culligan, for an office with a water connection near the coffee corner. The unit serves filtered tap water, and according to Culligan the rental includes installation, maintenance, filter changes and disinfection, with UV-C (Firewall®), BioCote® and touch-free dispensing. The weak point: not a single price on the website. The BRITA VIVREAU Top follows by a hair's breadth, and is the better choice if sparkling water is the reason for getting a unit.

If there is no pipe nearby, the picture changes. A bottled-water cooler with 18.9-litre carboys or the SPA® Fountain with 10-litre SPA Reine packs only needs a power socket. The SPA Fountain costs €18.50 a month for the tabletop model and €20 for the freestanding model, excluding VAT, with no long-term contract, and the rental includes delivery, installation, technical support, replacement and collection. The water is natural mineral water from the High Fens, where according to Spadel a nature area of 13,177 hectares protects the source, with a dry residue of 38 mg/l and 3 mg/l of sodium. The limitations are just as clear: still water only, you order the packs separately from your drinks supplier or wholesaler, and once the packs are counted it is the most expensive option per litre in this comparison. That is why it scores 6.8 and ranks fifth, even though it is the only unit in the list that works without a connection.

What is the difference between a mains-fed cooler and a cooler with packs or bottles?

A mains-fed cooler (point-of-use) filters and chills tap water on the spot. You pay a higher rental or purchase price, plus maintenance and filters, but after that only your water bill; you do need a connection within easy reach, usually within a metre of the unit, plus a 220 V power socket. A cooler with packs or bottles can stand wherever you like, with no works, and dispenses bottled or mineral water; there you pay per litre for the water itself. With a bottled-water cooler you swap an 18.9-litre carboy, with the SPA Fountain a 10-litre pack that is lighter to lift. In the small print: with mains systems, filter changes and call-outs determine the real price, with packs it is the price per pack from your supplier.

How much does renting a water cooler cost per month, and what does a litre cost?

According to the quote platforms, renting a bottled-water cooler for around ten users starts at about €15 a month (Bobex). Companeo gives €25 to €40 a month for a mains-fed unit with medium capacity and €40 to €80 for high capacity, with maintenance and filters often, but not always, included (updated on 23 September 2026). These are indicative prices. The SPA Fountain costs €18.50 (compact) or €20 (freestanding) a month, excluding VAT. PHIL quotes €50 to €65 a month for a personalised cooler. Culligan, BRITA, Aqualex and Aquablu work on quote.

Back to the litre: take 10 employees who each draw 0.75 litres a working day from the cooler, over 21 working days. That is about 158 litres a month, or 16 packs of 10 litres. The rental of a compact SPA Fountain alone works out at €18.50 / 158 = about €0.12 per litre. But the packs cost more than the rental: on 13 October 2026 we read €11.95 to €13.49 per 10-litre pack of SPA Reine at Bruneau, excluding VAT, or about €1.20 to €1.35 per litre of water. Sixteen packs plus the rental come to €210 to €234 a month, or €1.33 to €1.48 per litre drawn. A bottled-water cooler at €15 a month with carboys at €0.60 to €0.90 per litre (Bobex) comes to €0.69 to €0.99 per litre. A mains-fed unit at €25 to €40 a month comes to €0.16 to €0.25 per litre, plus a water bill that is negligible per litre; PHIL to €0.32 to €0.41. Per litre, the SPA Fountain is therefore the most expensive option in this comparison. These are our own calculations, with the assumptions stated.

Is mineral water from a cooler better than filtered tap water?

Not better in the sense of safer: Flemish tap water is strictly monitored, and according to the 2024 figures 99.56% of analyses met the standards. Since 12 January 2026 a European PFAS limit of 100 ng/l also applies, and De Watergroep reports that after treatment it stays well below it. The difference lies elsewhere. Natural mineral water such as SPA Reine comes from a recognised, protected source and has a fixed composition that is printed on the label; tap water varies from municipality to municipality in hardness and taste, and a filter in the cooler mainly removes chlorine taste and limescale. With a pack, what ends up in the glass is therefore the same water every day; with a mains-fed cooler it is your local tap water, well filtered.

What happens to the packaging of packs and bottles?

With the 10-litre SPA Reine pack, the box, made of 90% recycled fibres, goes flat with paper and cardboard; the inner bag with its tap goes in the blue PMD bag. For the 10-litre pack, Spadel states 75% less plastic and 40% less CO2 than the average of the SPA Reine PET range, and 70% less plastic than a pack of six 1.5-litre bottles. Those are the manufacturer's figures, each with a different basis of comparison, and that is how you should read them. A mains-fed cooler has no packaging per litre, but it does have filters and, for sparkling water, CO2 cylinders that need replacing. A bottled-water cooler works with reusable 18.9-litre carboys that the supplier collects.

Methodology : We compare the units we could find in Belgium with a verifiable presence: product pages, press releases and technical data sheets from the manufacturers, supplemented by indicative market prices from quote platforms (Bobex, Companeo) and a retail price for the packs (Bruneau). We did not test a single unit ourselves. Each unit gets a score out of ten per criterion, and the six criteria above carry equal weight: the score out of ten is the average. Culligan gets 45 out of 60 points, the BRITA VIVREAU Top 44, Aqualex 42.5, PHIL 41.5, the SPA® Fountain 41 and Aquablu 40. The SPA® Fountain gets top marks for the water (10) and the connection (10) and scores well on the contract (9), but low on the choice of water (3, still only) and on cost per litre (3), because once the packs are counted it delivers the most expensive litre in the comparison. A bottled-water cooler with carboys appears in the worked examples, with Bobex's indicative prices. Where a manufacturer does not publish a price, we say so; we do not estimate. The per-litre examples are our own calculation, with the assumptions stated. We only reproduce environmental figures with the basis of comparison the manufacturer itself gives.

Frequently asked questions

Which water cooler is the cheapest for a small office?

To start with, a unit without a connection is the cheapest: no installation costs and rental of around €15 to €20 a month (bottled-water cooler from €15 according to Bobex, compact SPA Fountain €18.50 excluding VAT). Per litre it is a different story: with the water included, a litre costs €0.69 to €0.99 from a bottled-water cooler and €1.33 to €1.48 from the SPA Fountain, against €0.16 to €0.25 on the mains (our calculation for 158 litres a month).

Do you need a water pipe for a water cooler?

Not always. Mains-fed coolers (Culligan, BRITA VIVREAU, Aqualex, Aquablu) need a connection within easy reach. Units with carboys or packs, such as a bottled-water cooler with 18.9-litre carboys or the SPA Fountain with 10-litre packs, only need a power socket.

Does the SPA Fountain also dispense sparkling water?

According to Spadel's information, the SPA Fountain works with 10-litre SPA Reine packs, which are still water. For sparkling water from a cooler, look at mains-fed units with a CO2 cylinder, such as the BRITA VIVREAU Top.

How much water does an office employee drink per day?

According to EFSA, as summarised on Wikipedia, the recommended total water intake is 2.0 litres a day for women and 2.5 litres for men, food included. Part of that you drink at work; for an estimate we allow 0.5 to 1 litre per employee per working day, an assumption rather than a standard.

Does an employer have to provide drinking water?

Yes. According to the FPS Employment, the employer makes drinking water or another drink available to workers; tap water is drinking water. If the maximum temperature at work is exceeded, the employer must also provide suitable refreshing drinks free of charge.

How do you sort an empty 10-litre pack?

The cardboard box goes flat with paper and cardboard, the inner bag with its tap in the blue PMD bag.

What is included in the rental of a water cooler?

That varies by supplier. With the SPA Fountain, delivery, installation, support, replacement and collection are included in the monthly rental, the packs are not. With mains-fed systems, check whether filters, disinfection, call-outs and CO2 cylinders are included.
